Lille and Lens met at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Friday evening for the 125th Derby du Nord, a Ligue 1 fixture on the ninth matchday that RMC Sport carried live. More than 45,000 spectators were present as the visitors kicked off, with former Lille players Florent Balmont and Rio Mavuba invited to perform the ceremonial first kick. According to RMC Sport, the match developed into a one-sided contest in terms of territory, with the hosts pressing high and dictating play while Lens struggled to escape their own half.
Why it matters
The Derby du Nord carries weight beyond the league table, and this edition arrived with both clubs looking toward the upper reaches of the standings, as Le Figaro described it. For Lille, the evening was a test of whether dominance could be converted into points against a disciplined rival. For Lens, the match was about survival under sustained pressure and the value of a goalkeeper in form. RMC Sport reported that the visitors' travelling support was absent by the club's own decision rather than by order of the authorities, a sanction following the conduct of part of the Lens section at Bruges in the Champions League. That made the atmosphere at Stade Pierre-Mauroy an entirely home affair, with a large tifo unveiled before kick-off and a stadium-wide clapping routine as the teams waited to enter.
Risser stands between Lille and the opener
Lens goalkeeper Risser was the central figure of the first half. RMC Sport reported that he produced an exceptional save to deny young Lille forward Diaoune, who had connected with a powerful header. Earlier, Benjamin André had released Ethan Mbappé, who shifted onto his left foot and curled an effort that brushed the outside of Risser's left post with the goalkeeper beaten. Diaoune later came close again, striking a ferocious shot from outside the area after a Lille corner fell to him, only for the ball to crash against the crossbar. RMC Sport described the Lens bench and defence as having survived a serious scare.
